Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects and helps to determine our world view, how we feel about ourselves and others, how we make decisions, and how we handle stress. Mental health can affect anyone at any age ranging from childhood all the way through adulthood. As we all know life is full of ups and downs, some of which can affect our thinking, behavior and mood.

Factors contributing to mental health issues:

  • Biological – genetic makeup, brain chemistry
  • Life experiences – dealing with loss, trauma of any kind, abuse, etc.
  • Family history of mental health issues

If you are concerned for yourself and/or your loved one or maybe would just like to improve on certain aspects of your life here are some early warning signs to be aware of:

Early Warning Signs:

  • Isolation – pulling away from friends, family, co-workers and activities that once brought pleasure
  • Eating or sleeping too much or too little
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Smoking, drinking or using drugs more than usual
  • Experiencing extreme mood swings that are problematic in relationships
  • Intrusive and racing thoughts
  • Hearing voices or believing things that are not true
  • Thinking of harming yourself or others
  • Displaying difficulty in performing daily tasks like taking care of kids, going to work or going to school
